TECHNICAL BUYING GUIDE

SSD endurance & workload

Capacity tells only part of the story.

1. Describe the writes, not just the drive size

State the application, typical daily writes, expected service life and any sustained write bursts. Ask the supplier for the proposed model’s endurance rating and the conditions behind it.

2. Read the model-specific terms

TBW expresses a cumulative write quantity, while DWPD relates writes to drive capacity and a defined period. A warranty may end at a time or usage limit. Compare the model-specific datasheet and warranty together.

3. Look beyond peak speed

A short benchmark may not reflect sustained workload behavior. Ask which workload, queue depth, test duration and host platform support a performance figure. Capacity variants can have different performance and endurance.

4. Use evidence in sample evaluation

Check the proposed firmware and configuration, record the test environment and agree acceptance criteria. Request the exact monitoring fields supported by the device rather than assuming every SMART field is available.

Use the actual product datasheet and host documentation for final decisions. Further reading: Samsung SSD installation guidance and Kingston memory overview.
