1. Start with the host interface
Confirm whether the system supports SATA or PCIe/NVMe. M.2 describes a form factor; an M.2 slot and drive still need compatible interface support.
2. Check physical fit
Record the supported length and keying for M.2 drives, or the bay size and thickness for 2.5-inch drives. Check heatsink and component clearance.
3. Specify the workload
Describe the application and expected read/write activity. Request model-specific endurance, sustained performance and operating conditions rather than relying on a headline speed.
4. Qualify the proposed unit
Confirm the exact part number, controller, NAND, firmware and written warranty. Test a sample on the target system and agree how future component changes will be handled.
